New Books
The Western Pacific
On
the scale of modern mega-sized railroads, the Western Pacific might now
be thought of as a regional carrier. In its day, however, the WP was a
key link in the transcontinental rail network, offering competitive
service between Southern California and the Pacific Northwest.
In
later years, WP was divided into seven operating divisions. Each
subdivision had individual character, unique operating challenges, and
distinct scenic elements providing variety at every corner of the
railroad. In addition to the seven subdivisions, the WP also operated
two wholly-owned subsidiaries; the Sacramento Northern and the
Tidewater Southern. All seven of WP's subdivisions, as well as
subsidiaries SN and TS, are documented in the 256 pages of The Western
Pacific. This spectacular book is lavishly illustrated with 410 full
color photographs and 11 detailed maps.

Shortlines of the Pacifc Northwest: Washington and Oregon
This
title by noted rail photographer, Jim Shaw, features an in depth look
at the many Pacific Northwest Shortlines between the early 1960s and
2008. There are more than 75 rail lines presented by geographical
areas; Washington-West of the Cascades; Washington-Central and Eastern
“The Inland Empire”; Oregon’s West Coast; and Oregon-Central and
Eastern. Each is presented with a brief history and the many color and
black and white photos are comprehensively captioned. $59.95 Free

Con-Cor "HO" and "N" Pioneer Zephyr
with the twin headlights

After
several accidents, the Pioneer Zephyr was modified in the 1940's to add
a double "Twin Headlight" assembly above the nose, and the rear
observation car. The second headlight on the nose was an
early version of the "Mars" light. A bright oscillating light enabled
motorists to see the approaching train from a greater distance.
The Con-Cor version of the "Twin Headlight" Zephyr will use a
flashing LED that will operate in both DC and DCC mode to simulate this
safety feature. The Pioneer Zephyr retained this "twin headlight" until
its final run on March 20th, 1960.
